Dog restraints in cars (seatbelts) Empty Dog restraints in cars (seatbelts)

I've got a large girl (80lbs) and I'd like to get a seatbelt of some kind for her when she is in the vehicle with us.

Any recommendations?? Also, how restrictive are they?? She likes to alternate between sitting, standing (to look out the side window) and laying down.

    Thanks!

Try a harness from a petstore (PetSmart). They've got car harnesses designed to give them some freedom to lie or sit, and it's padded with the fake sheepskin fabric so it doesn't rub into them like a normal seat belt would.

Just a quick update: I did buy a harness from PetSmart, and tried it on Emma. Took us a bit of time to figure out how to still give her some freedom of movement on the back bench seat without getting tangled up, but I think we got it figured out.

BTW: Emma actually seemed to like the added stability of using the harness in the car, so it seems to be a hit.

Glad to hear that she's enjoying her freedom of movement!! It's always easier on us parents too, to know that our pooches are nicely secured in place Very Happy

Are seat belts a law now for dogs? I heard something along the lines of a possible seat belt law coming into effect a while back but haven't heard anything since.

Different places have different bylaws. You can always call your bylaw enforcement to confirm. I know here in Red Deer it isn't a law to restrain a dog if they are INSIDE the vehicle, but if they are in the back of a truck and not tied down, it's against the law. Even if they can reach the edge of the box, OR (now I think this one a little odd) if they are directly standing/sitting/laying on metal. Inside however, it's not required to restrain them, although I think it's a good idea to restrain them.
