Edmonton is blessed with lots of park land, and therefore we also get lots of choices for places our dogs can run and have fun as a dog only can.

Which off-leash area(s) do you frequent and which it your #1 favorite?

For Hotshot, his #1 fav now appears to be Terwilligar Park. Before that it was Jackie Parker park (his first off-leash experience was there) and Laurier Park.

We also visited many other of the smaller in the community parks, but they did not stack up to the 3 I mentioned. And one was so dirty from dog excrement, I thought it unsanitary for him to run around in and we left (Grand Trunk).

The only off leash parks I've ever been to was the Grand Trunk park and Terwilligar.

I was always afraid of Grand Trunk because of how close it is to a busy street. And with a puppy, it's hard to tell what they're going to do when they're off leash for the first couple of times.

How are Jackie Parker and Laurier?

We take Boomer and Leelah to Laurier all the time, it is a beautiful walk through the River Valley with lots of different paths you can take ,and a huge socializaton field to meet other dog owners and to play fetch with your dog... when it is low enough there is a spot you can take them down to the river and if they are swimmers it is doggie heaven!!!! A couple of the paths are also open as bike paths which can be a bit of a pain making sure they don't run over your puppy, but there are plenty of paths where bikes are not allowed.

Hermitage is really nice if you aren't into Grand Trunk. It's down the Yellowhead a bit, but there's a nice trail, river access (if you've got a swimmer) and some nice fieldy areas.

I really am not impressed with Edmonton's (40) off leash parks.

I find many of the owners DO NOT supervise their dog.

Since I am an owner of small breed dogs off leash parks are not an option I am comfortable with. That is why I started my Dog Play Groups.

We meet regularly indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer. Clean, supervised, safe, organized and fun!

We have our Mighty Mutts Facility - SE Edmonton from October - May and then in May we move to our (3) outdoor locations.

Check us out. Mighty Mutts or Mighty Mites.

I agree with a lot of the owners not properly looking after their dogs at the parks. We've had many run-ins with aggressive dogs who are running freely with their owners nowhere in site to stop them if they start a fight. Oakley is not a big dog (and I can really sympathize for even smaller breeds) and if a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler wants to attack him, he's pretty well hooped.

If my dog was ever attacked by and aggressive dog with a neglecting owner, their will be a sore dog and a very sorry owner. I have no respect for those who don't respect others. I just wish their was a way to police this issue.

As a former Off Leash Sites Cleanup volunteer, so far our favorite park is the Jasper because of its cleanliness. Dobbie also gets to meet a lot of his fellow doberman pinschers in this park.

I live by the Callingwood dog park and I've had really good luck there with the other dogs. We haven't come across any aggressive dogs or irresponsible owners. It's pretty clean and is good for a game of fetch. It's too small for much else though. I'd really like to try a park with some water where Emmy can try out swimming. I've heard there's one with an enclosed swimming area. Does anyone know where it is?
