    Neighbor's Dog

Post  bean on Tue Sep 08, 2009 1:15 am

I have a neighbor that moved in on thursday, and since then his dog has been tied outside. This dog barks all the time, and I haven't slept since thursday as he lets the dog bark ALL night.. is there anything that i can do to stop it. Talking to him is useless. he's the kind of guy who knows it all. Can I call Bylaw or the cops??? I really really want to sleep again...

If you have already tried talking to the guy and he's ignoring the complaint, absolutely go to the police. If you can get other neighbors to go the police about it as well, it will be even better. It's unfair to everyone around as well as the dog.

    Keep us updated.

Even call city bylaw, or animal control. The first time will be a warning and hopefully an officer will scare your neighboor enough to make him fix the situation, the second time will be a very hefty fine..etc. Worse and worse situation for him each time. And you will remain completely annonymous so even if he calls asking who issued the complaint, they won't release your information.

Good luck and I hope you get some sleep soon!!

I'd even call the SPCA. A dog should not be tied up all day and night in a yard. That's just WRONG.

Unfortunately they would probably just come out and check if the dog had food, water and shelter. They are very restricted in what they can do if a dog is tied up. And sometimes a tree is considered a shelter, it's all very stupid sometimes. Although I am not very familiar with Edmonton humane society right now as I just moved back to town.

But calling them wouldn't hurt, thats for sure. Sometimes they can convince an owner to give their pet better living conditions or a better home.

the owners went out one night and the dog just barked and barked and barked so another neighbor put the dog in her garage for the sanity of everyone else. she put a note on thier door saying "I have your dog, please come get her" she watched them come home at 12:00am.. waited 10 min and nothing... so she went and knocked on the door... no answer... she walked around back to the sliding door and they just looked at her.. finally he came and said "what" she said "did you get the note i have your dog" and the guy said "ya so"??? evetually he went and got the dog... put her right back on her leash outside. ... can we steal the dog and take it to the pound? lol i feel so bad for this pup. and there are no laws to protect them. best he'll get is a fine for noise disturbance... the dog barks and he just yells at her to shut up.

I work in an animal services office and I know for a fact that if you try and take the dog from the yard to the pound, you can be sued. It's too risky to do that. They'll have the ticket and impound fee, but they'll fight it the whole way because "YOU stole their dog" Some people are insane and should not own dogs. Just call in complaints and the warnings turn into tickets, if they don't pay the tickets (which increase heavily each time) then they'll have a warrant issued for their arrest.

It will take time for the laws to actually do something, but hopefully in the end it will work out. For now, try a barking log as well. Mark down what times and for how long the dog is barking, that way the officers can know it is excessive or not and then they can go from there. I hope you get some sleep soon!

BTW, Bean: Do you know what kind of dog it is?? What age??? Perhaps the owners would agree to let you take the dog for a walk daily or perhaps do some training with it?? That might help......
