    Hello from Caernarvon, Edmonton!

Post  Rainyfool on Fri Sep 25, 2009 11:42 am

Myself being a "cat person", I decided to appease to my wife and get a dog in July. What really caught my eye was the story in the paper about the California Rescue that brought a bunch of small dogs from California, who were scheduled to be put down. On July 10th, we met Charlie.

While in the Humane Society, they told us he would mark up everything, and had certain behavioral issues we'd have to try to work out. We brought him home...not a drop of pee has been on these floors! He (in our minds) is the perfect dog! Not too big, not to small. Just perfect. He doesn't bark, chew, beg for table food..nothing. We definitely got spoiled and lucked out with him!

Thinking that it could be our demeanor (yeah right!), we decided to help MORE dogs...by fostering. I'm not an expert or anything, because we are currently fostering our first puppy. Day 3 so far. What a job! From chewing, barking, and the WHINING! Wow! I knew what to expect, but this was unheard of. Unfortunately, when we got Johnny, my wife was in Calgary for a business trip. So it was me and the boys! Let's just say my hair went a lot more grey...and I'm 28!

This being the 3rd night, Johnny has taken form as being as sweet as he is cute. He is voluntarily going in his crate...occasionally sits on command...and is great on the leash. I'm trying not to get too attached to him as he IS up for adoption. Mornings like today, I couldn't have been happier to see him find another family...but nights like tonight..it's going to be hard. With a little patience and a lot of love, he's the pooch that most people would melt for.

So if you would like to come down to PetSmart (North end Edmonton, on 137th ave, next to Best Buy) on Saturday, September 26, from 11-2...stop by for a BBQ at Adoption Day! You will see Johnny there with his brothers, and many other dogs rescued from the Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart). Unfortunately I can't be there (got a wedding to go to), but Johnny will be there to say hi to everyone!

Welcome. If you'd like to, post up pictures of the dogs you are fostering and throw in a little info about them. It might help them find new homes.

Welcome! It's so nice to hear you are fostering pups! I would love to if I had a bigger place! One day though....

Man if I was in Edmonton I would be over there in a flash to check all the adoptions out! Good luck to Johnny and his brothers there Smile I'm sure he'll find a wonderful, loving home Smile

Here's Johnny (trying his best not to do a Ed McMahon impression...or even Nicholson). Again, he will be at PetSmart on 137th Ave on Saturday. I will not be there...but you can ask one of the volunteers! It's a close group who all have experience with each dog. Bring your appetite as a BBQ will be going!

It is not easy to have a puppy but is even more difficult not to get attached to them when fostering.

I would love to foster but my back yard is 2 acres with only a rail fence for the horses, my 2 dogs are quite possessive of me and MY HUSBAND would divorce me if I had more dogs.

I wish you all the best. Even if you're a foster failure you haven't failed. Keep us up to date.

Well I was looking at it this way. The foster dogs will go to a great home since I have a say to where they go. I know what the dog is like and where he's best suited.

I've had the unfortunate experience of putting animals down (not me myself...a vet did it), and nothing hurts more. To send a pooch off to a loving family...it will be a good feeling! And a majority of the adopting families tend to keep in touch (from what I've been told).

Here's some more pictures of our little guy Charlie, and of Johnny (including getting all prepped for tomorrow's event at PetSmart).

I would've adopted Johnny in a heartbeat if I didn't already have Oakley.

Did anyone make it down to PetSmart today? Johnny was pretty popular! We might be taking him to a home tomorrow for his 3-4 hour "getting to know you" meeting.

I didn't personally. I'm still out of town. Good to hear about Johnny. I knew it wouldn't take long before someone snatched him up. All the best Johnny.

Bad news, we didn't get a call from a perspective family Sad It could still happen, but I'm not holding my breath. It's too bad too, because the lady who was interested held him for a couple hours...not letting anyone else see Johnny. Maybe at the next Adoption Day on Oct 17th I believe...or someone will see him online!

    Thanks for all the well-wishes!

Look on the bright side, you get to spend an extra couple weeks with the little guy. I wouldn't worry about him finding a home. It's just a matter of time.

Maybe advertise on kijiji.ca. I know a lot of dogs get new homes on that site.

Yeah, we're happy to see him back today...he's learning so much by being with us. I guess more time means more prep for adoption!

And already posted an ad on Kijiji. The ad might be too honest though lol

I think it's a good ad. The second time you mention separation anxiety could be taken out though.... otherwise, it's got all the info that a good pet parent should be looking for!!

That ad has received close to 1200 viewings...and we got a couple emails, but I referred them to call the HART screening line.

We ARE driving Johnny to Gibbon's tomorrow for a day visit. We really all goes well Smile

Johnny's adopted! The family absolutely fell in love with him...and he fell in love with how much room he had to run around in!

We'll be dropping him off in a couple hours and to go through all the paperwork!
